Democrats in the US Senate have failed to pass legislation to try to force President George W Bush to set a timetable for a withdrawal from Iraq. The bill set a goal of withdrawing all troops by March 2008. It fell 12 votes short of the 60 needed.
In a separate vote, a panel in the House of Representatives backed a move to pull troops out by September 2008. That bill will now go before the full House, but is unlikely to get the Senate backing it needs, analysts say. Mr Bush has also made clear he will veto any legislation that sets out a timetable for a military pullout from Iraq.
"If we were to leave Iraq before the job is done, the enemy would follow us to the United States of America and we're not going to let it happen," he has said.

We so desperately need a timetable rather than a deadline. We should move quickly though.
