Elections after all?

The IEAT have sent us the following note as election monitors (we are registered as international election monitors in Iraq):

  • Note that Iraq’s Council of Representatives adjourned for summer recess without passing the election law. Meanwhile some political leaders are evaluating whether the 2005 election law can be used to hold Governorate council elections.
  • More than 900,000 Iraqi’s have visited voter registration centers to check their details and receive services. The election team continues to pay visits to the field and to hold daily operations meetings to monitor voter registration update activities and trouble-shoot issues. Voter registration operations are largely running smoothly and the vast majority of voter registration centers are operating on schedule.

Which may mean something can be salvaged more quickly than originally anticipated.
