Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq (KRG.org) Today after 61 court sessions, Chief Judge Mohammed al-Uraibi delivered his sentencing in the case against those accused of carrying out the Anfal campaign in the 1980s. Ali Hassan al-Majid, known as “Chemical Ali”, Saddam Hussein’s cousin and the former Secretary General of the Baath Party's Northern Bureau, was sentenced to death for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Sultan Hashim Ahmad al-Tai, former Defence Minister, was sentenced to death for war crimes and crimes against humanity; Hussein Rashid Mohammed, former Deputy Director of Operations for the Iraqi Armed Forces, was sentenced to death for war crimes and crimes against humanity; Sabir al-Douri, former Director of Military Intelligence was sentenced to life imprisonment for war crimes and crimes against humanity; and Farhan Mutlaq Saleh, former Head of Military Intelligence's Eastern Regional Office was sentenced to life imprisonment for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Taher Muhammed al-Ani, ex-governor of Nineveh province, was cleared of war crimes and crimes against humanity due to lack of evidence.

During the Anfal campaign, more than 4,000 villages were destroyed, over 100,000 innocent civilians were killed, and tens of thousands of families were forced to leave from their homes. The Anfal’s purpose was nothing less than the genocidal eradication of the people of Kurdistan.
